Module 3: Using This Site With Assistive Technology
Module 3 of 5
Listen to this page:
This module explains, in practical terms, how this orientation course and the rest of the Online School are built to work with a screen reader, a keyboard, or both.
Getting around each page
- The very first focusable item on every page is a "Skip to main content" link, so you can jump straight past repeated navigation.
- Headings are used properly and in order, so you can jump between sections using your screen reader's heading navigation.
- Every link describes where it goes, so it still makes sense if you are reading a list of links out of context.
- Every interactive element can be reached and used with the Tab key and the Enter key alone. Nothing here requires a mouse or a touchscreen.
Listening instead of reading
Every lesson page has an audio player near the top, so you can listen to the page instead of reading it, or alongside your screen reader. The audio player is a standard browser control, so play, pause and the volume all work the way they do everywhere else.
Answering questions
The questions at the end of each module use real radio buttons, not custom graphics. That means your screen reader will correctly announce how many choices there are, and which one, if any, you have selected.
Check your understanding
Quick check. Choose the best answer for each question.
