Booking a place to stay, the honest way

Interview in another city? An exam far from home? Moving for a new job? Here's how to book a hotel, guesthouse or backpackers directly where you can, compare booking sites honestly, and avoid the scams that target travellers.

Snapshot as of October 2026 — rates, availability and even company names change often; always confirm on the operator's own site before you pay

South Africa's hotel groups you can book directly

Booking directly with the hotel usually gets you their best-rate guarantee and skips the booking-site fee built into the price. These groups run their own booking sites.

Southern Sun

Full-service · nationwide

South Africa's biggest hotel group by far (formerly branded Tsogo Sun Hotels) — city hotels, resorts and everything in between, in every major city.

City Lodge Hotel Group

Includes Road Lodge & Town Lodge · budget-friendly

Runs several brands at different price points under one group — Road Lodge and Town Lodge are their budget options, worth checking if cost matters most.

Premier Hotels & Resorts

~25 properties · nationwide

A South African-owned group with hotels and resorts across the country, from city business hotels to coastal resorts.

Protea Hotels by Marriott

International brand · wide network

A long-running South African brand, now part of Marriott's international network — book through their dedicated Protea site or the main Marriott site.

Sun International

Resorts & casino hotels · Sun City, GrandWest, Boardwalk and more

Known for its resort and casino-hotel properties — a good option if you're after somewhere with more to do on site, not just a room for the night.

Why book direct when you can? Most big hotel groups promise to match or beat any price you'd find on a booking site if you book on their own site — and you deal with the hotel directly if anything changes. It's worth checking their site even if you found the room on a booking site first.

Booking sites (OTAs)

For comparing lots of hotels and guesthouses at once, or booking somewhere without its own direct-booking site, a booking site is the normal option.

Open Booking.com ↗

The most widely used booking site in South Africa, with hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs nationwide and free cancellation on most listings.

Open Lekkeslaap ↗

A South African-owned site focused on local guesthouses, B&Bs and self-catering — worth a look alongside the bigger international sites.

Compare before you pay. The exact same room can be listed at very different prices across booking sites — one South African comparison found a gap of up to R3,000 on the same room on the same dates. Check two or three sites (and the hotel's own site) before you book.

Hostels & backpackers

If you're travelling on a tight budget — including along the Baz Bus route — a hostel or backpackers is usually far cheaper than a hotel room.

Open Hostelworld ↗

The standard way to find and book hostels and backpackers in South Africa — reviews from other travellers, dorm and private room options, and usually free cancellation.

Short-term rentals (Airbnb and similar)

A good option for a longer stay or a group, but South Africa has started regulating short-term rentals — worth knowing before you book or host.

New rules are arriving. A national Code of Good Practice for short-term rentals, published in 2026, is pushing hosts toward formal registration, hospitality-style taxes and safety compliance. Cape Town has gone further with a draft by-law that would require a registration number on every listing from mid-2027. None of this stops you from booking an Airbnb — it mostly affects hosts — but a registered, well-reviewed listing is generally a safer bet while the rules are still settling.

Staying safe

How to book without getting caught outstep by step
Pay on the platformNever EFT to a personal accountScreenshot everything
▾
Steps
  1. Decide what fits your trip and budget — a hotel for a short work trip, a backpackers if you're budget-travelling, or a rental if you need more space or a longer stay.
  2. Compare 2–3 options across a direct hotel site and one or two booking sites before you pick.
  3. Check the cancellation policy before you pay anything — "free cancellation" dates matter if your plans change.
  4. Pay only through the official site or app you booked on — never by EFT straight into someone's personal bank account, however good the "direct booking discount" sounds.
  5. Save your booking confirmation and reference number — a screenshot works if you don't have signal when you arrive.
  6. If you'll arrive late, message or call ahead to confirm late check-in so your room isn't given away.
  7. Save the address offline (screenshot a map) in case you lose signal on the way.
Red flags to watch for
  • A listing that's priced far below everything else nearby — verify it's real before paying anything
  • Anyone asking you to pay outside the platform, especially by EFT to a personal account
  • An "urgent confirm your payment" message or email with a link — go to the site directly yourself instead of clicking it
  • Photos that look reused or too generic — a quick reverse image search can catch a copied listing
  • A host or agent who won't answer a direct question about the exact address or won't do a call
If something feels off, trust that. Fake accommodation listings and phishing messages pretending to be from Booking.com or Airbnb have both been reported in South Africa. When in doubt, go to the official site or app directly rather than clicking a link in a message, and call the property to confirm it's real before you pay.
