Booking a flight, and getting to the airport

Whether it's an interview in another city, a new job, studying overseas or getting home to family, here's how to compare and book a flight directly with the airline — no booking fees, no middleman. It covers South Africa's domestic airlines, 110 airlines from around the world, and how to get to or from the airport by Gautrain or e-hailing once you land.

Snapshot as of October 2026 — airline routes, fares and partnerships change often; always confirm on the airline's own site before you pay

South Africa's domestic airlines

Five airlines currently fly South Africa's main domestic routes. Book directly on the airline's own website or app — it's the same price as, or cheaper than, a travel agent, and you deal with the airline directly if anything changes.

FlySafair

Low-cost · Johannesburg & Cape Town hubs

South Africa's largest low-cost carrier by domestic flights. Usually the cheapest option on routes it flies, especially booked a few weeks ahead.

flysafair.co.za ↗

Airlink

Full-service · Cape Town & O.R. Tambo hubs

The widest domestic and regional network — over 45 destinations, including smaller towns and cities other airlines don't serve.

LIFT

Full-service · Johannesburg & Cape Town

Flies the busiest trunk route — Johannesburg ↔ Cape Town — plus Durban, with WiFi on board and a loyalty programme.

lift.co.za ↗

CemAir

Regional · Johannesburg hub

Reaches smaller destinations like George, East London, Margate, Kimberley and Hoedspruit, as well as the main cities.

cemair.co.za ↗

South African Airways (SAA)

Full-service · O.R. Tambo hub

South Africa's flag carrier. Since January 2026, SAA and CemAir fly under a codeshare — meaning you can sometimes book a single SAA ticket that connects onto a CemAir flight to a smaller destination, with your baggage transferred for you.

These are real example fares, not live prices. They're from one comparison of weekend trips booked in advance — not today's prices. No airline is cheapest on every route, so always compare 2–3 airlines for your actual dates before you book.

* Serves South Africa means the airline has scheduled flights to or from South Africa at the time this list was checked (October 2026). Some routes are seasonal or change at short notice, so check your dates on the airline's own site. An airline without the tag can still get you here by connecting through another airline or city. Airlines that do not fly to South Africa can still be booked, usually from the airline's country site.
Flying overseas? Check these first.

How to book, step by step

The same process works on every airline's own website or app.

  1. Pick 2–3 airlines that fly your route (see above) and open each one's official site or app.
  2. Compare the same dates across all of them — flying midweek (Tuesday/Wednesday) is usually cheaper than Friday or Sunday.
  3. Check what's actually included — the cheapest fare is often hand-luggage only, with checked baggage charged separately. Add it up before comparing prices.
  4. Enter passenger details exactly as they appear on the ID or passport you'll travel with — airlines can charge a fee, or refuse boarding, for a mismatched name.
  5. Pay directly on the airline's own site using a bank card — never send an EFT or bank-to-bank payment to an individual's personal account for a "booking".
  6. Save your e-ticket and booking reference — a screenshot or downloaded PDF works offline if you don't have data at the airport.
  7. Arrive at least 60–90 minutes before a domestic flight, with your ID or passport ready.
Careful: Only pay on the airline's own official website or app, or a well-known, established travel site. Be wary of social media ads offering flights at suspiciously low prices in exchange for an EFT to a personal bank account — that's a common scam, and there's no way to get your money back once it's sent.

Getting to and from the airport

Once you've booked your flight, here's how to actually get to O.R. Tambo (Johannesburg) or your destination airport — and home again.

Gautraintrain · Johannesburg, Pretoria & O.R. Tambo
~R206–R234 one-way to the airport05:00–21:30 dailyCards only, no cash
▾

The Gautrain's Airport Line runs between O.R. Tambo International and Sandton, with a change at Sandton for Rosebank, Park Station (Johannesburg city centre), Pretoria, Hatfield and other stations on the main line. The full trip between the airport and central Johannesburg or Pretoria takes about an hour including the change.

How to ride
  1. At any Gautrain station, buy a Gautrain Card from the Ticket Vending Machine or ticket office (minimum load is R32, maximum R3,200) — or tap a contactless bank card instead, if yours supports it.
  2. Tap in at the station gate, ride to Sandton, then tap through to change platforms for the Airport Line if you're continuing to or from O.R. Tambo.
  3. Tap out at your destination station — the fare is calculated automatically from where you tapped in.
  4. Connecting Gautrain Midibuses cover nearby suburbs from most stations if your final stop isn't walkable — these also need a Swift/Gautrain card or contactless bank card.
What you'll need
  • A Gautrain Card (buy and load at any station) or a contactless debit/credit card — cash is not accepted anywhere in the system
  • Only one card per trip — you can't split a fare across two cards
  • A bit of buffer time if you're connecting to a flight — budget the full hour, not just the advertised ride time
Fares depend on which stations you travel between and whether it's peak time (06:00–08:30 and 15:00–18:30 on weekdays) — trips to and from the airport are generally R206 to R234. Confirm the exact fare for your trip on the official site before you travel.
Open the official Gautrain site ↗

Check live fares, train times, and station maps directly on gautrain.co.za.

E-hailingUber · Bolt · inDrive
Door to doorNeeds the app + data or WiFi
▾

E-hailing apps pick you up directly from arrivals and drop you at your exact address — the trade-off is cost and surge pricing at busy times, versus the Gautrain's fixed fare and fixed schedule.

Uber

Fixed upfront price shown before you confirm. Widely available at O.R. Tambo and most SA airports.

uber.com/za ↗
Bolt

Often a cheaper fixed-price alternative to Uber on the same route — worth comparing both before you order.

bolt.eu/en-za ↗
inDrive

You and the driver agree a fare together instead of a fixed price — SA's third most-used e-hailing app, and data-free to use on several networks.

indrive.com ↗
Staying safe
  • Check the driver's name, photo, car colour and licence plate in the app match the car in front of you before getting in.
  • Share your trip status with a friend or family member from inside the app — all three apps have this built in.
  • Sit in the back seat, and confirm the driver knows your name before you confirm theirs.
  • If something feels wrong, you can end the trip and report it in the app afterward.
inDrive zero-rated its app with several South African mobile networks back in 2023, meaning it can be used without mobile data on those networks — useful if you land with no airtime or data loaded yet.
