You've got the job — now you need somewhere for the salary to land. Tap a bank below for its exact steps, or scan the comparison table first to see which one fits you.
Snapshot as of September 2026 — confirm current details with each bank before applyingEvery bank — digital-only or traditional — has to follow the same identity-verification law (FICA), so what you'll need is roughly the same everywhere, even when the app itself looks completely different.
Built app-first — tap a bank to open its steps. These generally don't need a branch visit at all for a basic account.
Standard Bank, FNB, Absa and Nedbank all let you start an application online or in-app; a couple still need one short branch step.

Opening a bank account means sharing your ID number, a photo of your ID, and often a selfie or proof of address — that's required by law (FICA), and it's normal. Only do this through the bank's own official app or its own website, never through a link someone sends you, and never send a photo of your ID over WhatsApp or email to "speed up" an application. Legitimate banks verify you inside their own app, not over chat.
