Opening a bank account online in South Africa

You've got the job — now you need somewhere for the salary to land. Tap a bank below for its exact steps, or scan the comparison table first to see which one fits you.

Snapshot as of September 2026 — confirm current details with each bank before applying

Before you start: what South African law requires

Every bank — digital-only or traditional — has to follow the same identity-verification law (FICA), so what you'll need is roughly the same everywhere, even when the app itself looks completely different.

Proof of identity

  • A green bar-coded ID book or South African smart ID card, or
  • A valid passport, if you're a foreign national (a work or study permit is often needed too)

Proof of address — not older than 3 months, where required

  • Water or electricity bill
  • Cellphone or landline account statement
  • Municipal rates and taxes invoice
  • Letter from your councillor or local chief
  • Retail account statement, SARS tax return, or short-term insurance policy
No bill in your name? Most banks still accept it together with a signed affidavit confirming you live there, or a letter from the account holder — ask the specific bank how they want it handled.

Digital-first banks

Built app-first — tap a bank to open its steps. These generally don't need a branch visit at all for a basic account.

Capitecapp only
No branch visit18+
▾
How to apply
  1. Download the Capitec app (Android, Apple or Huawei app store).
  2. Open the app, select "Open an Account", then "Myself".
  3. Enter your South African ID number.
  4. Take a couple of selfies so the app can verify it's you.
  5. Enter your personal details and sign the agreement digitally.
What you'll need
  • A smartphone with an active South African cell number
  • Your South African ID number
  • No supporting documents to upload — Capitec's own guidance says straight up that you won't need any for this route
Good to know: Capitec says the whole process takes only a few minutes. Foreign nationals have a separate application route on Capitec's website rather than the in-app "Myself" flow.
TymeBankapp, or a TFG-store kiosk
No branch visit16+
▾
How to apply
  1. Download the TymeBank app (App Store or Play Store).
  2. Have your ID and phone ready, then follow the prompts to enter your details.
  3. Upload documents if the app asks for any.
  4. Take a selfie so the app can biometrically verify you.
What you'll need
  • Your South African ID number
  • An active South African mobile number
  • Proof you are 16 or older
Good to know: TymeBank also partners with The Foschini Group (TFG), so you can open an account in person at one of roughly 600 kiosks inside TFG stores if you'd rather not do it entirely on your phone — useful where data or a smartphone is a barrier.
Bank Zeroapp only
No branch visit16+ (under 16 via guardian)
▾
How to apply
  1. Download the Bank Zero app (App Store or Play Store).
  2. Register and upload the required documents when prompted.
  3. Record your biometrics (Bank Zero suggests a quiet, well-lit space).
  4. Wait for FICA approval — your account may show as temporarily restricted while this is checked.
What you'll need
  • A South African ID (smart card, ID book, passport, or driving licence)
  • Proof of address (a document, or a photo of one) — an affidavit may be needed if the address isn't in your name
  • An active South African cell number and a smartphone with a camera
Good to know: For a learner under 16, a parent or guardian starts the process by inviting them with the learner's ID number and a photo of their ID or birth certificate; the learner still needs their own cell number, separate from the parent's.
Discovery Bankapp, existing clients only
Discovery product required18+
▾
How to apply
  1. Download the Discovery Bank app.
  2. Activate your account through the app using your South African ID number.
What you'll need
  • An existing qualifying Discovery product (for example, Discovery Health medical scheme or Vitality membership)
  • A South African ID number
  • Age 18 or older
Good to know: This is the one exception in this group — Discovery Bank's own site describes the account as exclusive to Discovery clients, and not available to foreign nationals. Only worth listing if the learner already has a Discovery product.

The big four

Standard Bank, FNB, Absa and Nedbank all let you start an application online or in-app; a couple still need one short branch step.

Standard BankMyMo Account
Branch visit to collect card16+
▾
How to apply
  1. Go to Standard Bank's MyMo page and select "Apply now".
  2. Provide the required details and create your online banking password.
  3. Wait for an SMS telling you your card is ready.
  4. Visit your preferred branch to collect the physical card and start banking.
What you'll need
  • A valid South African ID
  • Proof of home address, not older than 3 months (needed at card collection)
  • Proof of income (needed at card collection)
Good to know: The application itself is online, but you still need to collect the card in person — budget for one branch trip. Under 18 without an ID needs an in-branch application with a parent/guardian and an original birth certificate.
FNBEasy / Eazy Zero Account
USSD / appAge: confirm with FNB
▾
How to apply
  1. Dial *120*277# on your cellphone.
  2. Enter your name, surname and South African ID number when prompted.
  3. Follow the remaining prompts to finish setting up the account.
What you'll need
  • Your South African ID number
  • A cellphone
Good to know: FNB's own page focuses on the quick USSD route and doesn't spell out a full supporting-document list — before relying on this for a group of learners, confirm the current requirements directly with FNB.
AbsaTransact Account
Apply onlineAge: confirm with Absa
▾
How to apply
  1. Go to Absa's Transact Account page and start the online application.
  2. Provide your ID details and upload proof of residence.
  3. Submit the application — no payslip or minimum income is required.
What you'll need
  • A valid South African ID, or a passport for foreign nationals
  • Proof of residence (e.g. a utility bill), not older than 3 months
Good to know: Absa markets this account as accessible to students, freelancers and anyone without a steady income, since no payslip is required. A branch application is also offered as an alternative, not a requirement.
Nedbankapp or online banking
No branch visitVaries by account
▾
How to apply
  1. Download the Nedbank Money app, or go to Nedbank's online banking site.
  2. Choose an account (Nedbank has several tiers aimed at different needs and budgets).
  3. Follow the in-app prompts to verify your identity and complete the application.
What you'll need
  • A South African ID
  • The exact supporting-document list isn't published in detail on Nedbank's general page — the app confirms what it needs as you go
Good to know: Nedbank offers youth-specific options too (e.g. Nedbank4Me, Private One Young) — worth a look if the learner is under 18. Nedbank's site also offers a call with an adviser if a specific tier needs explaining.

Tips for a smooth application

A note on privacy

Opening a bank account means sharing your ID number, a photo of your ID, and often a selfie or proof of address — that's required by law (FICA), and it's normal. Only do this through the bank's own official app or its own website, never through a link someone sends you, and never send a photo of your ID over WhatsApp or email to "speed up" an application. Legitimate banks verify you inside their own app, not over chat.
